Seventy-five per cent of the disabled live below the poverty level -and more despondently - they live 'in the shadows.' The potential for self-imposed exile into a world of isolation is only marginally less debilitating than their apparent disability. New friends, new professional goals, new places of interest and endless new adventures are addressed with each of our consumers. There's a world of'new and improved' out there and the Center for Independent Living brings that world to life. We bring consumers back into the workforce, as productive community members. Over the past year, we've accepted 61 referrals from VocRehab. We were successful in placing over 50% of those accepted, with 20% of those achieving full-time, non-probationary careers, with a host of benefits. In order to achieve this degree of success, over 25 new employers per month were personally contacted. The employment department grossed over $140,000 which can be used for continued enhancement of community outreach programs and enrichment of our consumer's lives. In addition to those adults referred by VocRehab, 17 youths were placed for summer internships with various employers throughout Broward County. The students worked an average of 20 hours per week for six weeks. The Center negotiated employer/employee agreements, which were duly executed. Intermittently during the summer, employment staff diligently followed up with both the interns and the employers to ensure that all goals contracted for were being met The "Core" of the Center...Knowledge: The Center surpassed expectations of Tallahassee regulatory agencies after their most recent audit of our operating practices and certifications. The success of this audit was unprecedented - in the history of Centers for Independent Living Members of our employment department attended numerous educational seminars, including:
